BSG Season 1 Episode 3 (Movie/TV Club)

Hey a welcome to another day of movie club!  Today we watched Bastille Day (S.1 Ep.3)

KEEP IN MIND IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU SHOULD HAVE WATCHED THIS EPISODE AS THIS POST AND COMMENTS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS!

THE PLOT

Bastille Day:  Deciding to use the thousand prisoners on a prison transport ship to mine the ice on the planet they’ve found, Galactica’s plans are upset when a political prisoner onboard leads an uprising, taking hostages. He questions the legitimacy of Roslin’s government and demands free elections to be held in the fleet.

—————————-

My Thoughts

This episode is one that really  shows why this series is/was so great.  This episode is about needing prisoners to mine water out of a moon in space otherwise everyone is going to die BUT it is also about democracy and class warfare.  In a new world is everyone equal?  Can society go on?  Is sticking with the rules the only way to survive?  Do the old rules stick?

Also it might just be me but I don’t care about still on the planet Boomer.  And thats saying something if you know how I feel about Asians.

—————————–

And of course

Also if these get popular enough I may open a forum for it, but lets take it one step at a time.

And remember if you want to join movie club you can watch what we watch many ways but if you use Netflix.com/PhillyD you get a free month trial of streaming movies/tv shows and it helps us out here.

Taco Bell Wins! Mocks Losers!

If you are unfamiliar, law firm Beasley Allen brought a lawsuit against Taco Bell for not selling real beef in their diarea causing burritos.  So Taco Bell put out this full page ad explaining their beef was real.  Turns out real beef IS used in Taco Bell food.  Since then:

Beasley Allen may have dropped its class-action lawsuit, but Taco Bell isn’t entirely satisfied.

In a full page ad that ran in today’s edition of the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, and The New York Times, the Yum! Brands division asked the Alabama-based lawfirm to apologize for claiming that its meat mixture doesn’t meet the USDA’s requirements to be called “beef.”

“You go it wrong,” Taco Bell tells Beasley Allen in the ad, “and you’re probably feeling pretty bad right about now. But you know what always helps? Saying to everyone, ‘I’m sorry’.”

Tim Hetherington dead at 41

RIP: 41-year-old British-born filmmaker and photojournalist Tim Hetherington, co-director of the Oscar-nominated Afghanistan war documentary Restrepowas killed today when an RPG struck a group of journalists in the Libyan city of Misrata.

Three others were also injured in the attack: Pulitzer Prize-nominated Getty photographer Chris Hondros, Panos Agency photographer Guy Martin — both of whom are said to be in serious condition — and freelancer Michael Brown, who was slightly wounded.
In his final tweet, posted just hours before the attack, Hetherington wrote: “In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.”

(Above: Tim Hetherington (right), alongside fellow Restrepo director Sebastian Junger.)

Its a sad and sobering story that reminds us what is happening in Libya right now.  What many have been calling “half assed” warfare from NATO forces has left many Libyans and international reporters open to the indiscriminate murder that was promised by Qadaffi.  My thoughts go out to Tim who was considered one of the best and bravest in his field.

But the question in my mind remains the same.  In an Arab world that does not want us there but also requests massive aid, how do you involve a military already spread extremely thin?

Alison Brie is my new favorite person today.

Alison Brie is easily one of the funniest women on tv right now, so rather than respect her for her craft lets objectify her for the next 5 minutes. HOOOOOOOOOOT.  In summation:  While many people say there is nothing hotter than a girl who is funny, I must correct them and say, “that there is nothing better than a hot girl……in her underwear”.

Also if you haven’t seen her on “Community” you are wasting useful time that could be spent laughing.

Kipp Rusty Walker Stabs Self to Death

This is easily one of the weirdest stories I have read about in the past month.  On Thursday, Kipp Rusty Walker, a 19 year old musician performed at an open mic night in Bend, Ore.  To finish his show Kipp stood up and stabbed himself to death with a knife he had in his pocket.  To repeat….HE STABBED HIMSELF MULTIPLE TIMES INT HE CHEST.  This was shocking to everyone, but some of his friends:

“It was almost like he wanted to prove a point, like there’s no point in being scared of death because it’s going to happen to us anyway,” the friend said…

He said the first time Walker threatened to kill himself was on Mar. 20th. The friend called Walker’s parents, and Walker was taken to the psychiatric unit at St. Charles Medical Center-Bend, where he spent a few days, according to his friend.

Walker’s friend said he warned him about the consequences of what he planned to do.

“I actually told him, I was like, ‘Dude, this is going to mess a lot of people up,'” the friend said.

Main point…..WTFing F.
